Formula

Our Balance Serum didn’t change much from its previous version. In fact, the ingredients are the same! However, we learned through our research that there were a few things we could adjust in terms of percentages and ratios to strengthen this formula. We increased the oils most responsible for barrier repair and functioning, as well as increased oils that were high in tannins and balanced omegas, making this product well-suited to all forms of dermatitis. This Serum is still the lightest in our line up, and perhaps even lighter than it was before. The essential oils have been reduced a bit, making this Serum smell slightly less medicinal than it did before. The essential oils that are present were chosen specifically for their balancing effect on oil production, the microbiome, and depleted nervous systems. The skin’s response to stress, and acne as a result of stress, is proven and becoming more recognized in the world of dermatology, so breathe deeply and be held by these plants.

Tip

Science: With so much talk of barrier repair in the skin industry at this time, it must be addressed here. It is indisputable that the barrier consists of fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol. However, what seems to be ignored in today’s conversations on this topic is that plants contain their own version of ceramides and phytosterols that are similar to our own which do support our own barrier functioning. In order for plant lipids to do this though, they must be unrefined, otherwise those specific nutrients would have been removed in the refining process. One thought to consider: why is it assumed to be more beneficial to apply lab synthesized ceramides and cholesterol than it is to apply whole plants that contain these constituents?

Oil balances oil. Treating like with like is something that may sound counter-intuitive. However, most breakout prone skin is put through so much trauma from foaming cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and oil-free moisturizers that it is left crying out for hydration and moisture. All of those harsh stripping products leave the skin vulnerable to harmful bacteria and inflammation. Typically after two weeks of a hydrating elixir and lightweight oil serum, congested acneic skin does a dramatic turnaround.

Like all of our Serums and oils, our Balance Serum is non-comedogenic. The comedogenic scale was originally created using oils that were not well documented, but assuming they were standardized cosmetic oils, which means they were refined with all antioxidants and nutrients removed, as well as enzymes denatured. Our brand’s oils are different: they are all raw with antioxidants, nutrients, and enzymes intact – which actually means that the entire comedogenic scale does not apply to our brand whatsoever. Those beneficial parts of the oil that have not been removed ensure that our oils are food for our microbiome, food for our skin, and can be more easily broken down and utilized.

How to Use

Put 3-5 drops onto fingertips and press into clean face and neck. Apply Elixir first for hydration, followed by Serum and then Balm. This product works as a treatment serum, a moisturizer, and it strengthens your skin’s response to the sun and environmental elements.

Use within 6 months of opening and within 18 months of the manufacture date, which is found on the bottom of the bottle.

Ingredients

Jojoba & Sesame – Both of these raw, unrefined oils are pressed fresh for Laurel Skin Care. These carefully chosen lightweight oils restore balance and regulate the skin’s own oil production. Both of these oils also contain a wax very similar to our own barrier’s ceramides, which makes them barrier strengthening and restorative. Jojoba alone has shown the ability to repair a damaged skin barrier in research studies.

Helichrysum – Freshly cultivated, harvested and distilled in the Pacific Northwest, this tiny yellow flower is a true skin healer and a potent anti-inflammatory. It is balancing to our microbiome and restorative and strengthening to the skin.

Cranberry Seed Oil – This lightweight, but incredibly nutrient-dense oil is a perfect fit for oily skin that still needs a high dose of antioxidant content. Cranberry Seed Oil is high in tannins for a seed oil, which makes it ideal for conditions like perioral dermatitis. Cranberry Seed’s unique nutrient profile include Omega’s 3, 6 and 9, resveratrol, phospholipids and phytosterols, which makes this a standout oil for vibrant-aging, as well as inflammatory or acneic conditions.

Lavender – Our custom distilled California grown Biodynamic® Lavender essential oil is anti-inflammatory, calming, and cooling to the skin. It soothes the nervous system, which is often under duress alongside skin conditions like acne and inflammation. Lavender promotes healthy cell functioning and has a balancing action on both sebum production and the skin’s microbiome.

Passionflower – This soothing, beautiful flower and vine is farmed locally just for Laurel Skin Care. It gently promotes detoxification and clear skin, and its astringent action is healing to skin irritations and redness.
